Mama Shu

Out of Tragedy...

Shamayin Harris, who likes to be called Mama Shu, took charge.  She looked at the blight on the street she lives on and made a decision to make a change, after the death of her son, Jakobi RA.  She made a change, just on the very block she lives on.

Avalon Village

The Avalon Village is a sustainable eco-village being built in Highland Park, MI (inside the city of Detroit), the same Detroit at which Umar bragged about being sold out.  This blighted street is being transformed into a safe, functional, and beautiful space for an entire community.

The inspiration behind this transformation project is a baby.  Two-year old Jakobi RA was killed in a hit-and-run accident in 2007.  His memory is being honored by his mother, Mama Shu, and embraced by an entire community.  Jakobi RA Park is a gathering place for celebrations, community service projects, activities and events throughout the year.

On tap is construction for The Homework House, The Goddess Marketplace and landscaping/beautification.  Future plans include The Avalon Healing House, The Blue Moon Cafe and The Avalon Village Community Greenhouse.

The progress of these projects can be followed on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Here is a project worth donating to, in my opinion.  Here is a woman who is actually doing work and helping people.  Here is a woman who is being transparent with her plans and funding.  She has information on her website showing the projects in place, projects in progress and projects that are upcoming.

Mama Shu isn't simply accepting cash donations and not explaining what is happening with the money.  She is also accepting in-kind donations for tools, industrial washer and dryer, brooms and dustpans, stoves, sewing machines, and snow blowers, among other in-kind donations.

So, with Mama Shu, it seems, if you donate, whether money or other items, you will see where your donation is being used.

I encourage everyone to take a look at The Avalon Village website, and if you can, donate whatever you can afford.  Support Mama Shu and keeping this village sustainable.

And, Umar, if you are reading this and you plan to go forward with your school, I suggest you take a lesson from Mama...
