Armchair Psychology
I think it's rather pathetic that a parent feels it necessary to apologize for his adult son who is seemingly as accomplished and well-traveled as Umar.
Could it be that everything isn't as it appears to be?
For example, I admit that the first thing I noticed about Mr. Johnson is his appearance. He is a "light-skinned," green-eyed black man--with a color similar to Sara Suten Seti.

One wonders is Umar would call his own father an "albino" as an insult and tell Mr. Johnson that he is fighting the "cracker within."
One wonders if Umar, on some level, resents his mother, who I understand, passed away, thereby leaving him.
One wonders if this is where Umar gets his resentment of women from and if a "separation anxiety" is the source of his poor relationships with women (two children by two babymammas and not married).
One wonders if he resents his tough disciplinarian, light-skinned, green-eyed father who shipped him away to military school.
With my father, that’s where I got my discipline from. Obviously, him being a drill instructor for the United Sates Marine Corps he was very, very firm… possibly even to a detriment. Sometimes I wonder if I came to choose the field of psychology because of how firm he was, but it was the balance. You had the extreme compassion from your mom and you had the extreme non-emotional discipline from the father. (Emphasis mine). From: http://kentakepage.com/interview-with-dr-umar-johnson
