This Is How He Does It!

Umar Johnson thinks his game is tight.  However, those of us who are thinking, who research, who ask questions and otherwise listen to their gut knows, and knew for a long time that something wasn't right.

But, believe it or not, I've been researching Jim Jones (not the rapper) and The People's Temple.  The techniques used by Jim Jones are eerily similar to the techniques used by Umar Johnson.  One of the things that I learned, or was reminded of, as I researched is that Jim Jones often made people sign blank pieces of paper.  Check this out.
Jim Jones often made Temple members sign blank pieces of paper.  The papers were filled in later, sometimes with false confessions to outrageous acts.  Members were made to file false affidavits alleging atrocities involving church "enemies."

Think about it. What does Umar do?  Firstly, he presents himself as an 'expert' in school psychology, therapy, clinical psychology, and so on.  If a mother contacts him regarding her child, Umar starts flirting even before he discusses the nature of the "consultation."

For a school psychologist, therapist, clinical psychology, and whatever else he says he is, that would be completely unethical.

The next statement isn't designed to make anyone look bad or feel bad, but Umar knows that often times, the mothers he's working with don't know the appropriate ethical standards and behavioral protocols for those in such professions-or those claiming to be in such professions.  As one mother said, in regards to Umar Johnson,
Our initial contact was me attempting to schedule a consult for my daughter but resulting in him flirting, and me responding. No consult had taken place at that time. In fact, the consult was scheduled 3 weeks out. In the interim, soft flirts exchanged, if you will. And even on the day of the consult, the conversation started with a personal dialogue AND THEN the consult. I'm not sure if that falls within the realms of unethical or not but I didn't deem it as such. Perhaps this is Umar's strategy to not fall under the umbrella of practicing unethically. I don't know the laws surrounding ethics in school psychology but if you do, then you can decide if he was out of bounds or not.
A Mother

Another tactic that Jim Jones and Umar Johnson have in common is that they were, and are, in positions to obtain personal information about people who come to them.  If they were ethical, they wouldn't threaten to "air people out" or claim to have "receipts" on people like in the case of Umar Johnson.  He wouldn't make them sign fake confessions or blank pieces of paper, like Jim Jones did.

One more trait that both Umar Johnson and Jim Jones share is the ability to generate paranoia.  This is a difficult one to combat because they use race and racial animus to fuel it and there IS racism in our society.  However, using racial tension to generate paranoia for which the only solution is to believe that one person, and one person only, has all the answers is exploitative.

So if you think about it, if someone was in a situation like what is described above related to Umar Johnson, such as:
  • You've spoken with him about personal matters about yourself
  • You've spoken with him about personal matters concerning your children
  • You've spoken with him about the father(s) of your child(dren)
  • You've paid him money
AND...
  • God forbid, you submitted a resume to work at his invisible school, then he knows everything one would put on a resume.
Talk about getting into someone's "personals!"

This set up makes it harder for people to speak out against Umar.  The fear of having your personal business, and that of your children, out there for public consumption is enough to keep folks quiet.

If you don't believe me, ask Khym Ringgold.

Oh my good people, are you all getting the similarities?

Remember, in the final salvo, Jim Jones convinced people to give their children, their babies, the poisonous Kool-Aid before they took it themselves.

So, ask yourselves.  Are you in a cult without realizing it?

  1. Good work, TBA.

The greater silence of the "community" about this man is deeply troubling. Thank you for all the work you and others have put into documenting the danger this man is to women and children.
