Brother Roland, Charlamagne, and to Others Whom This May Concern,

This letter comes to you on the approval and affirmation of the elders in the Bailey family. I am Tarence Bailey Sr., United States Army Combat Veteran, and verified descendant of Perry Bailey, first born son of Harriet Bailey, the mother of Frederick Douglass. Roland, first and foremost, I want to thank you, on behalf of my family, and especially the elders of my family, for questioning the donation money collected, the fraudulent lineage, and the counterproductive rhetoric of Umar Johnson on your NewsOne show. While I thank you for offering critical questions of him, I would also caution you, Charlamagne, and others about giving Umar a platform for his hate-based rants and fraudulence. His actions and rhetoric are counterproductive to the honorable struggles of African Americans and all freedom loving people. Umar Johnson is a malignant cancer and a pariah to true movements against oppression and for the equity and rights of people in the US and around the world. He makes a mockery of those who stand for justice. Continue to provide critical analysis of a con-man like Umar, but I would recommend, on behalf of my family elders, that you not poison Black media outlets with giving a platform to a fraud like Umar Johnson, lest you become responsible for peddling his con-game to Black people.  

I have submitted to Umar Johnson and the public a document entitled DECLARATION from ELDERS of the BAILEY FAMILY: Disowning Umar Johnson, an Unverified Disgrace to the Family Name. Umar Johnson has not provided any family records or proof that he is a member of my family, but he continues to raise funds in my family’s name. My cousin, Kenneth B. Morris Jr., direct descendant of Frederick Douglass, is our family’s representative, and President of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives. The Douglass family provided a statement in April 2016 entitled PUBLIC STATEMENT on UMAR JOHNSON. Many others, who are not our family, have provided essays, articles, videos, and posts throughout social media, online news outlets, blogs, and more in support of our family against the slander and general misrepresentation of Umar Johnson. One of the most notable has been a response from the family of Harriet Tubman entitled Tubman-Ross Family Responds. In direct communications I had with them, the family of Harriet Tubman repudiated any validity of any relationship or association with Umar Johnson. They prefer not to acknowledge him or his deception in public.

Charlamagne, I have to be honest, I believe that you have done a disservice to the African American community by promoting the fraudulence of this con-man without asking any critical questions. Roland, on your part, you did not ask the pressing followup questions. I hope that you two do not see this as a personal indictment which it is not. However, please consider the details below:

Roland, on your show, you asked if Umar was a member of my family, and he gave you a family history which can be found online. Thank you for confronting Umar with the letter from the Douglass family. He is an expert at regurgitating the Douglass family tree, but again, this information is in the public record. I wish you would have asked him, as I and many others have done, if he could provide the documentation to backup his claims. To this day, he has provided no valid family records of being related to my family or the Tubman-Ross family. Claiming that he is related to historic families, without documented proof, speaks volumes to what many people have concluded is the game of a con-artist. His fraudulent activity goes even further, Roland. Are you aware that he claims to be related to other historic families?

Bishop Alexander Wayman was the seventh bishop of the AME Church. While standing on and desecrating the grave of Bishop Wayman’s wife in a video, Umar called her the Bishop’s daughter! He claims to be related to Bishop Wayman, but according to family records and family members, this is not verified. The Bishop’s grandson, who is a Bailey-Wayman and my cousin, researched Umar’s claims about his relationship to his family lineage and confirms that Umar is not related to him, according to his records. Further, Umar claims that he may also be related to Bishop Henry McNeal Turner because Bishop Wayman’s widow married Bishop Henry McNeal Turner in 1900. Harriet Wayman Turner was 72 years old when she remarried and had no children in this union which means he is not related to Bishop Turner either. His web of deceit is complex. Umar has provided no records to prove his relationship to any of these historic families. He peddles these snake oil salesman ideas to gullible followers. It is a shame that so many people have fallen for his fabricated grandiosity. However, again Roland and Charlamagne, as with many others, it is your responsibility as public personalities not to promote the falsehoods of this con-man, Umar Johnson.

The families of Bishop Alexander Wayman, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Bailey Douglass do not have definitive knowledge or documentation of any relationship of Umar Johnson as a member of these families and he has not provided any such evidence. As I stated in my DECLARATION, if any proof could be provided, the Bailey-Douglass family would disown him anyway. He has not provided any proof that he is related to any of these historic families and each family would like for him to provide proof or stop promoting this deceit to the Black community and raising money for an imaginary school that has passed deadline after deadlines to open.

Roland, you further questioned Umar about his degrees and he gave you his explanation. I wish you had asked him why he’s never shared his doctoral diploma to the public. He has not provided any diplomas, transcripts, or other documents which prove that he is a doctor of psychology. A simple picture of a valid diploma and transcripts would help to verify his doctoral degree, if he has one. You would think that someone, who many would argue suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder, would post a lot of pictures of his doctoral diploma and of him walking across the stage. Another question you should have asked him, Roland, is why was his dissertation removed from the university’s website? I consulted with Pan-African author, scholar, and friend Dr. Mukasa Afrika Ma’at and he informed me that because a person earns a doctorate it does not mean it cannot be revoked, for instance in the example of plagiarism. Dr. Ma’at explained that Umar may or may not have his doctorate and we cannot know unless proper records are provided to the public. Is it a plagiarism issue or some other reason that Umar has not provided his diploma. Why was his dissertation pulled from the university’s website? Was this due to poor scholarship or plagiarism? Dissertations are removed and degrees are revoked around issues of plagiarism. Dr. Ma’at explained that Michael Harriot of The Root confirming that Umar earned his doctorate in 2012 from his search in the National Student Clearinghouse is not definitive that he still has the degree without a diploma and transcripts being available to the public. Psychologists proudly display their credentials and diplomas in their offices. Their clients are reassured that professionals are treating them. Where is Umar’s office with his diploma posted? A few questions not answered by Michael Harriot or others are needed.

There are some disturbing pieces of evidence which any of his gullible and misled followers can find with a basic Google search. Umar is on record in this 2007 PDF document (see page 6) and this 2008 PDF document (see page 23), that’s the Pennsylvania Department of Education, saying he was “Dr.” Umar Johnson! There is also this US court document from a special education case from 2009 in which Umar again claimed to be a “Dr.” years before he supposedly earned the degree in 2012. I think this is not only fraudulent and wrong to those families and children he diagnosed or misdiagnosed as a fake “Dr.” before and after 2012, but this also seems that it would be illegal in a court of law.   

Roland, you asked Umar if Black men who chose to marry non-Black women had his respect. You asked him if Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier, Julian Bond, Vernon Jordan, and Frederick Douglass had his respect as Civil Rights icons who married White women. First, none of them would care if they had Umar’s respect. Second, although they married White women, these men dedicated their lives to fighting for the rights of Black people  - and not ripping them off in a thief’s con-game. Additionally, these men did not disrespect Black women. Umar has these grandiose delusions about himself pretending that he is the “New Nat Turner,” the “New Marcus Garvey,” the “New Malcolm X”! Can you imagine the disrespect to these great ancestors with this arrogance? Umar has disgraced, disrespected, defiled, cyber-bullied, and (go to 1:30) allegedly sexually assaulted Black women. In 2012, while Umar was lying about any number of issues including his doctorate, taking advantage of women, and frauding people out of money; I was risking my life in Kandahar, Afghanistan to protect the lives and safety of 15 Afghan women and three American women (one Black and two Whites) from the Taliban and the men in the civilian population who would have raped and killed them. I received the Army Commendation Medal and the Non-Article 5 NATO Medal for these acts of courage in protecting women. So, as a combat veteran, as a Bailey, as a man, I’m appalled by the likes of Umar! The great Civil Rights leaders and the great ancestors that he continues to disrespect were ALL married, ALL respected women, and ALL were honorable men of integrity, character, and sacrifice. Umar is none of these! Also, unlike Umar, I am married to a Black woman and I do not use fraudulent credentials to prey on vulnerable women. I’ve put my life on the line to protect women in Afghanistan and I will do the same for Black women or any women today. I have the utmost respect for Belafonte, Poitier, Bond, Jordan, and of course Frederick Douglass as men who have dedicated their lives to helping uplift Blacks and many other people. Umar Johnson is a pathetic excuse for a man. It has also been alleged that he doesn’t pay child support or have a relationship with the children he fathered, by Black women, that he never married. Umar does not respect Black women or any women. He is not the judge of Black manhood and deserves the respect of no one!

Thank you Roland for checking Umar for calling someone on your show a “coon”! We know that he uses disrespectful racial epithets toward Black people, such as the “N-word” which he has used frequently along with disrespecting light-skinned Blacks in his viral embarrassment with Seti. This was the live video recording in which he made the fake gangster call with the phone ringing in his ear! We also know that he disrespects even the people who give him money for a school that has never been built. He has also railed against “trifling ass Black people” because he had only received a quarter-million dollars in donations for his imaginary school. Umar has proven time and time again that he has horrible character. As a Bailey and a military man of service, I am repulsed by this fraud who claims he is a member of my family.

In my DECLARATION, I asked Umar to provide proof that he is related to my family and to stop raising money in the name of Frederick Douglass. He has not done so. As a result, we have begun to take action. I, and others, have reached out to our networks to inform them about this con-man who has used fraudulent credentials and his unverified relationship to my family. I want to thank you, Roland, for speaking up for truth and encourage you, Charlamange, and others to warn people about this professional fundraising con-man. I would highly recommend that you two do not bring this poisonous charlatan on NewsOne or the Breakfast Club again. If you do, then I and others must consider you part of the problem and not part of the solution. I would also recommend that you reach out to your vast network of media contacts and friends and ask them to never promote this con-man. Umar hates that I and others have spoken out against him. He doesn’t understand that I am a man of service, sacrifice, and courage. He will never understand this because he is a man of deceit, fraud, and selfish gain. In the spirit of Frederick Augustus Bailey Washington Douglass, let us all speak up and speak out against wrong; let us be champions in the battle against deceit; and let us all make sacrifices in the struggle for freedom.
