Narcissism 101

From:  http://psychcentral.com/disorders/narcissistic-personality-disorder-symptoms/

Symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder

1.  Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)

Example:  Umar saying he has six degrees, which cannot be verified.  He also acts extremely angry and defensive when asked about his education and credentials.  Lastly, he's imaged himself as some kind of superhero and has dubbed himself the "Prince of Pan-Africanism."

2. Preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

Example:  Umar believes he should have a residential school for which parents are supposed to turn their children over to him so that they never go home, thereby staying under his power and authority.

3.  Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)

Example:  Umar says he is the "most requested scholar in the world," the "most popular on the circuit," and the "only scholar" in his age group with degree(s) and that no one, even the elders, are above him in the conscious community.  Further, he claims he is on "the throne" and if someone wants his "throne," they have to come and take it.

4.  Requires excessive admiration

Example:  Umar wants to be believed and admired for what he says, even when what he says doesn't make sense, even when there is no proof, or even when he contradicts himself.

5.  Has a very strong sense of entitlement, e.g. unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations

Example:  Umar expects people to continue to send money to him for a "school" for which there is no substantiation of its existence, without question.  He even wants folks to get on a monthly payment plan.  And for those who continue to inquire about Umar and his methods, he is going to "smack the shit out of them" and "give out ass whippings."

6.  Is exploitative of others, e.g., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

Example:  Umar presents himself as a person with unique knowledge, but he is simply regurgitating information from Amos Wilson, Na'im Akbar, Jawanza Kunjufu and others.  But those to whom he is lecturing don't know this because - no disrespect intended - they simply don't read.  Umar is taking advantage of them because he knows that people are impressed by unknown information.  Therefore he is exploiting people who don't know any different, to get money from them.

7.  Lacks empathy, e.g., is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others

Example:  After his affair with Khym Ringgold was made public, Umar responds by publicly calling her a 'tramp' and 'maggot' while not thinking about her sons who are Black boys and young men -- some of the same young men for whom Umar claims he wants to build a school -- thoughts and reactions of the young Black men he claims to mentor.  Nor did he seem to give a thought about using Ms. Ringgold for sex, treating her like a jump off, and not thinking about how her children would process these events, not to mention if it would hurt Ms. Ringgold.  Instead, he accused Ms. Ringgold of engaging in a conspiracy to 'destroy' him and his work.

8.  Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her

Example:  Umar often accuses those who question him of being jealous of him because of his stature and his prominence, like Ken Morris of the Bailey/Douglass family who have asked him to give proof that he's related to him.  Why?  According to Umar, it's jealousy.  And, by the way, Tarence Bailey, another Bailey cousin, Umar informs us, is a "flunky." When people question his credentials, according to Umar, it's because they're haters.  NOTE:  I have never heard him answer questions or seen him provide any proof.

9.  Regularly shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

Example:  Just listen...start at about 28:00 minutes.  NOTE:  Once again, Umar does not answer direct questions.
