Is It Acceptable for Black People to Defraud Each Other?
"While this type of behavior by an individual is extremely rare, it's unacceptable and clearly it has consequences..."
Bobby Whithorne
GoFundMe spokesperson
GoFundMe spokesperson
Mr. Whithorne, do you really believe what you say? We, the Anti Fraud Warriors don't believe you.
Why?
Because Umar Johnson, using your platform, raised about $400,000 with over 10,000 donors, for the ostensible purpose of building a school.
Mr. Whithorne, here's another question for you. Was anyone at GoFundMe suspicious of a person who had a $4 million goal? Or did you care? After all, GoFundMe got its cut.
Because you see, Mr. Whithorne, Black people from all over the world, using your platform, gave Umar Johnson a lot of money.
And, Mr. Whithorne, there were people who questioned GoFundMe about Umar Johnson and the legitimacy of his GoFundMe campaign.
For example, Mr. Whithorne, did you know that:
- Umar Johnson had a 501(c)(4) non profit status while his GoFundMe campaign was not marked as a charitable account.
- Umar Johnson, as far as the Anti Fraud Warriors know, has never provided donors with a receipt to use for tax purposes, and not so much as a thank you note.
- Umar Johnson made one YouTube video after another, which he has subsequently deleted, to trick your company into believing that he was looking for a school.
- Umar Johnson claimed several start dates for his school. Most have come and gone without explanation
- Umar Johnson, and this might be most interesting to you, Mr. Whithorne, lied on your organization about how much GoFundMe took in fees.
- Umar Johnson lied on GoFundMe again by saying that your company investigated and implied that your company verified his supposed relationship to the family of Frederick Douglass. Since that time, DNA evidence has surfaced that proves no family relationship between Umar Johnson and the family of Frederick Douglass.
Mr. Whithorne, above is only an abbreviated list of the lies, dirty tricks, and other shenanigans pulled by Umar Johnson under the guise of wanting to start a school.
School promised in 2013 |
From your statement above, in the Bobbitt-McClure-D'Amico story of fraud and deception, you seems to be upset that your company was unwittingly involved in their deception.
So, let me ask you this, Mr. Whithorne. Are you just as upset with the deceptions of Umar Johnson using GoFundMe?
At the 3 minute mark or so in the video above, Umar Johnson lies and says we WILL have a school in 2017. Mr. Whithorne, have you noticed that it is almost 2019.
Because, I have never heard you or your company say one word about Umar Johnson and his lies and deceptions of your company and his donors.
And I'm wondering, Mr. Whithorne, could it be that your company doesn't care about Black victims of fraud?
Remember, Mr. Whithorne, you said:
"One fraudulent campaign is one too many, but when it does take place, we take action to protect donors."Really, Mr. Whithorne?
