But We Spend Our Money On...
Okay, you all, I am willing to concede a point to Umar Johnson.
Black folks spend a LOT of money on beauty products, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, cars, alcohol, name-brand this or that, and so on. I'm sure Umar is right about this, since our consumer power is great and that has been studied and proven time and again.
So, I have heard Umar Johnson say words to the effect of why spend money on these things when we can use our consumer power to better use like funding a school like Frederick Douglass Marcus Garvey RBG Academy for Boys. This seems like a logical argument, right?
And I actually agree. There are scores of reputable African-centered schools that need funding.
Here's where I part ways with Umar. There is NO evidence or proof of what Umar is doing with the money that has been donated already. There's NO legal or financial framework. There's nothing but what Umar says. Umar hasn't presented a laid-out, written plan, a team, a blueprint, a spreadsheet, a timeline, a budget, a curriculum outline, or a progress report, after at least 3 years of Umar soliciting money.
So, someone please explain how giving Umar money is better than spending your money the way you want, even if it is on Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, weave, and driving the kind of car you want?
Yet, folks gave him LOTS of money.
Most people I've spoken with think the idea of FDMG is an awesome idea. At the very least, no one I've spoken with is against the idea. However, without solid plans, without a timeline, without a curriculum, or even a location that has been solidified, they are adverse to donating to FDMG.
Then, of course, are the many reports of people who ask legitimate questions about Umar and the money, the building, the time frame for classes to start, etc., for the school online via social media. These folks are blocked on social media (I can attest to that), name-called and threatened by Umar, or his supporters/cronies, in addition to the lack of accountability, the lack of responsibility and the lack of respect Umar has shown to the very people who support him, makes them even more adverse to donating.
So, if he's being abusive to the people who follow him, support him, and donate to him, just think about how he would behave toward those who are asking questions, looking for documentation, and asking for proof, no matter how relevant or legitimate, that he doesn't like or want to answer.
And let's not even re-hash the questions about Umar's educational credentials.
Now, what does this have to do with the billions of dollars Black folks spend on consumer goods?
Well, no matter what one thinks about weaves, wigs, general hair care, the type of car one drives, if one celebrates Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, or Ramadan -- or spends an inordinate amount of money doing so -- at least those folks who do these things are getting a product and/or a service for the money they spend.

Also, the irony is, if Umar could produce what people are asking for, and behave like a true professional, and post his plans for the school on his website(s) or distribute them to his donors, he may get even MORE money because folks could see that he, at least, appears legitimate.

One thing I noticed about Umar is that he always posts videos "touring schools" on holidays such as Christmas and New Years. I thought that he may be doing this because he would have an excuse as to why for the millionth time he has not been able to get keys, responses from realtors ect. Now that I really think about it, I think there is more to it. The internet really provides people attention who either don't have many friends or have alienated everyone they know. I think reality really sets in during the holiday season which is why he is always trying to make his followers feel bad for participating in those activities. Imagine a person that has distanced himself from his entire family because of his arrogance and at the end of the day, after all the hollering, judging and screaming he does....He does not have ONE person he can pick up a phone to call and say Happy Holidays. He has burned every single bridge and too arrogant to right his wrongs.I think it is pretty sad. He doesn't have a relationship with his father, kids, friends and has lost the majority of his supporters. He always says he has the top spot, but I guarantee you he is probably one of the loneliest people you could ever meet. How sad.
