August 21, 2018...why is this date significant?
This date is significant because this is supposed to be the opening day of the Frederick Douglass Marcus Garvey RBG Academy for Boys.
Okay.
So, I wonder if Umar, or his team, have updated donors and supporters on the progress of the school, outside of making videos of Umar walking through buildings in different cities as though he is looking for a building, and asking for more money.
My impression is that there is a LOT more to getting a school off the ground than just obtaining a building. Further, I don't believe one can blow into town, buy a building, and just hang a sign out indicating that the school is open for students to come in, sign up, and start classes.
I believe that there's a LOT more to it. What do I mean? Well, I imagine that, once a building is obtained, that there may be some re-modeling needed, especially if the building is in poor repair. And if I recall some of Umar's videos correctly, in which he was walking through buildings, a number of them were in very poor repair; and may cost a great deal of money to bring up to code(s).
Further, Umar has been quite reluctant to update donors and supporters on the amount of money he's collected and his plans for the school. However, he didn't have a problem updating the GoFundMe organization, according to him. So, his donors don't know if the money is available to do the repair needed, depending on the building.
Also, the cost of the building would likely depend on the location. Has a location been determined? Is it Detroit? Is it Baltimore? Or is it Atlanta? Or even in South Africa?
I also understand that liability insurance is needed, according to the US law, and that liability insurance deductibles can cost anywhere from $500,000 to $1,000,000. Further, as I understand it (someone correct me if I'm wrong), liability insurance MUST be obtained before the doors open.
Now, since no one, outside of Umar and perhaps his team (whoever they are), really knows how much money is in the school fund, I would imagine donors and supporters would be hard-pressed to know if Umar can even come up with the money to address the issues of remodeling/repairing and liability insurance above.
There hasn't been any mention of the processes of setting up a governing body, hiring and paying people, putting worker's compensation insurance (legally required in all states) in place, working with police agencies to do background checks for potential employees, following non-discrimination laws, outlining a financial plan (which I would assume includes a financial integrity plan), paying for developing age and grade appropriate curricula that is commensurate with state standards, obtaining accreditation, getting permits, hiring architects and contractors, having a tuition plan for parents, and so on.
It seems to me that doing what it takes to meet all of these inspections, standards, and requirements would take longer than one year and cost more than the $373,244, according to today's view of his GoFundMe account and the rumored $700,000 dollars he is alleged to have collected from our people.
And Umar doesn't even have a building secured yet anywhere in the world?
I'on know...seems like a lot of work is to be done over the span of one year...
