Oswald Bates or Norman Bates...Or Both?

Oswald Bates

Remember the television show called In Living Color?  I do.  The television show featured unforgettable characters like Vera de Milo, Homey D. Clown, Wanda the Ugly Girl, and....Oswald Bates.

Oswald Bates was a character, acted out by Damon Wayans, who attempted to sound intelligent and learned, but was basically a motor mouth full of hot air.

Norman Bates

If anyone has watched the movie Psycho, or has heard of the character called Norman Bates, knows that the name Norman Bates acts as a stand-in descriptor for a man who has a relationship with his mother that is considered abnormal or overly enmeshed.

Mother-son enmeshment is an unhealthy dynamic where boundaries are blurred, leading to an overly dependent relationship. This can include inappropriate dependencies, such as emotional and/or financial.

Sounds like anyone we know?

Umar Johnson is a combination of both Oswald Bates and Norman Bates, if you ask me.  

And so is Umar Johnson.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities.  It was first described by the psychologists David Dunning and Just Kruger in 1999.
